The World’s Most Luxurious Retirement Homes
1 x 60 for Channel 5
If money were no object, what would be your dream retirement home? We meet rich retirees living it up in regal glamour at The Palace in Miami, a state-of-the-art wellness at The Ridge in Colorado, and a Downton Abbey lifestyle at Danny House, in Sussex, England.
Owner Helen Shaham envisaged “a hotel for the elderly” – adorned with marble, chandeliers, a muralled swimming pool, private theatre, hyperbaric oxygen chamber and apartments costing up to $200,000 a year. Jackie has lived here for 9 years and has a Valentines party to attend, but meeting men is tricky when only 30% of the residents are male! Larry shows us around one the most expensive apartments - his penthouse. But it’s not all parties – he has been overdoing his fitness regime.
In the 450-year-old country manor, Danny House in Sussex, residents see themselves as an extended family. 90-year-old Joan does the flowers, graphic designer Derek puts on the art classes and there is even an orphaned lamb to care for. But romance is in the air for 86-year-old Susan, as she tries to persuade her boyfriend of 3 years John (who she met online via the Daily Telegraph) to move in, to Danny House.
At the Ridge in Colorado, ex-tap and burlesque dancer Rita still has the moves at 97. New residents Mike and Donna, had serious health scares, and Mike tries hitting the ski slopes again at 84.
